TURNED APPLIQUE CLASS
SUPPLY LIST
Travel Iron with a pointy tip - MOST IMPORTANT TOOL – CLOVER WEDGE IRON IS PERFECT
NOT the Clover Mini Iron / wand type to begin with, but is useful later
1 pack CJenkins Freezer Paper - If you cannot find it, don’t panic. I can gift you some for the class.
Sharpie Pen SUPER FINE thin liner
Paper Scissors – both large and small
Fabric Scissors – both large and small
Best Press Starch alternative liquid
Small plastic container or cup - to hold small amount of Best Press while you work
¼” wide paint brush or stencil brush – good quality, from a hobby store
Stiletto (Tailors awl) - with a long sharp steel tip
OR
Tweezer with a “crane style neck” tip - This is what I personally prefer
Roxanne “Glue Baste-it” – with metal tip for precision application
Fray Block - NOT Fray Check which dries too stiff !!!
Straw Needles/Applique Needles size 10 or 11
Threads - The thinnest threads you have or can find. I use 100 wt YLI silk thread.
Aurifil now has an 80wt cotton thread which is also great for hand applique.
Applique Scissors or Embroidery scissors, approx. 4” with sharp thin point
Pressing mat with a firm surface.
Omnigrid mat is perfect. The June Tailor mat is NOT good for this method.
You can even make your own perfect mat. Ask me how if you would like to do this.
Large scrap piece of 100% cream/white cotton fabric to cover and protect your pressing mat
FABRICS:
Scraps of Greens, reds, pinks, yellows, blues, purple or whatever colors you like to make flower & leaves from. at least a fat quarter for background
TRAVEL IRON - THE MOST IMPORTANT TOOL for this applique method
The surface should preferably have no holes, but small ones are OK.
The tip should be pointed, not chunky and round.
The iron must reach a high temperature i.e. the higher the Wattage, the higher temperature
CLOVER WEDGE IRON
This is also a Clover iron, but it is NOT recommended as the primary iron, but as a supplement for more advanced shapes. Do not purchase one just for the class. The iron above is the most important.
PRESSING MAT
It is very important that the pressing mat surface is NOT soft.
The Omnigrid combined Pressing and Cutting mats are perfect.
If you decide to purchase one, get the 12 x 18” size. It is the most versatile size.
You can also make your own pressing mat.
Take a piece of particle board, layer thermal batting on top and fold over edges. Then add a layer or two of muslin on top. Fold over the edges. Staple and/or tape the muslin to the back.
CLOVER Stiletto – STRAIGHT TAILORS AWL
Bamboo or wood stilettos are not recommended. Long thin steel is best.
Sharp tipped awl/stiletto
Sharp angled tip tweezers w/”crane neck”
THIS IS MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE AND NO OTHER TWEEZER IS GOOD IN MY OPINION
BEST PRESS STARCH ALTERNATIVE
FREEZER PAPER by C JENKINS
The Reynolds freezer paper available from supermarkets is too thin and has too little wax, but can be used in a pinch if you cannot find C Jenkins’ Freezer paper.
ROXANNE GLUE BASTE IT
Several sizes. Make sure you purchase one with a metal tip – see photo
APPLIQUE SCISSORS - Embroidery Scissors – small with thin sharp tip
Gingher 4” - Karen Kay Buckley 4” - KAI N5000 Needle Craft scissors or similar
FRAY BLOCK (NOT Fray CHECK!!)
STRAW NEEDLES – size 10 or 11
Jean Kimball’s Straw Needles Clover Black Gold Needles
THREADS
YLI or Kimono 100wt Silk thread
60 wt Cotton thread or thinner
AURIFIL has released a new 80wt cotton thread which I have tested and it is very nice to sew with. The stitches disappear as well as with the 100wt silk thread.
Other THIN threads can be used, such as Glide, Bottom Line, Sulky threads etc.
Machine Embroidery threads are also OK, so if you have some, bring them.
